Wardrobe Curation

True luxury for modern cosmopolitan woman is freeing up our time to do the things we enjoy. We are trying to juggle home, work and social life leaving us very little time to sort through our cluttered closet trying to find that “perfect something” to wear. How often have you said, “I have nothing to wear” with a closetful of clothes? Whether this comes from buying too deep into fast fashion or too many seasonal trends, over time we have adapted the mentality of luxury being about having more. This has lead us to having to make a choice with too many options in our closet.

Born out of a dilemma of getting dressed herself,Jody has edited her closet to keep only the essentials she’s curated over the course of her career in fashion. This has led Jody to create capsule collections with three simple ideas:

  • The styles need to be wearable and easy to style into an outfit
  • The styles need to be elevated in both craftsmanship and aesthetic
  • The styles will become the core, go-to essentials to build your wardrobe

At Jody Tjan, we encourage our customers to have a “quality over quantity” mentality by thinking about investing in wardrobe curation, spending on high quality clothes that will last for years to come. Buying into timeless classics that will withstand the test of time and purchasing with the intent of creating outfits that reflect your personal style. All of this will make the cost per wear worthwhile and you will gain a beautiful wardrobe that you will actually enjoy wearing without having the need of spending more time and money replenishing. We know every woman has her own personal style and we embrace each woman’s individuality, it is why provide capsule collections of core essentials so you can curate a wardrobe to reflect your personal style and expression.

With over 25 years experience working in product development and production within the fashion industry, Jody Tjan has worked with artisans in factories all over the world. She has worked with designer and couture house which have given her a deep appreciation for refined craftsmanship and making clothes last. Jody understands the laborious process of fabric mills when they comb the raw cotton, then spin the yarns with a higher twist to make a cotton shirting last. Not taking short-cuts in the processes, even down to the fiber is the extra details that add to the longevity but also the cost of the material.

When developing her sweaters, she knows that higher elevation of the cashmere goat produces finer quality cashmere. These refined materials are not produced in large quantities because it is a costly process and the natural resources are limited. She also knows that working with fine gauge yarns requires skilled machine knit technicians while working with skilled hand knit artisans produce chunky cashmere sweaters with unique characteristics .

Working closely with old school Italian pattern makers and fitting with trained fit models, Jody has developed a refined sense of how to construct patterns and manipulate fabrics to mold to the body. This is something that cannot be simply done with computer pattern making or flat patterning. Every fabric has its own characteristics in the way it will fall on the body. It is why she works with leather sewing factories with hand cutters who know how to slice leather with a razor and not simply cut leather with scissors. She understands the two shirting fabrics she is using requires different stitches per inch. For the double faced cashmere, she understands that making the flat fell stitch by hand is the best way to finish the seams. When she is working with lace, knows that swimsuit and lingerie factories have the proper machinery.

Through the craftsmanship of the numerous skilled labor that is used from the time the fiber for material is harvested to the processes to turn into luxurious fabric and later designed, patterned, cut and sewn numerous hands come into the garments at Jody Tjan. Our core ethos is to provide you the highest quality materials as well as fair wages.

When it comes to craftsmanship, Jody firmly believes in slow fashion. Often times, it takes her 6 months to a year to design, craft and engineer a style. In that time, she is looking for suppliers who can provide her with the fabrics and materials she needs. She spends a lot of time meeting with factories who can have skilled artisans to make the products she wants in the small batches her business model is built around.

All of this is what it means when Jody Tjan is talking about craftsmanship.
